  1. Needs to happen as soon as possible.

  2. please start with the 41st ward -

  3. What's the difference? The SEIU communist front is buying coucil seats just like they bought up the Illinois house and senate. Just look at the money going to O'Connor and Arena. And don't tell me they're a "labor" union. I'm a 399 member and that's a labor union. SEIU represents the people when you go to a government agency and a dozen people are standing around and one is working. Get ready to dig deeper into your pockets.

  4. Cut the number of committees too! Its the Republican way - small government.

  5. The 41st Ward Alderman did close to nothing for 20 years. What a waste - consolidate the 41st and 45th with one leader.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I agree with Rahm on this one - to much beauracracy, nothing getting done.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Wouldn't that be a kick in the a--? Imagine, the 41st getting absorbed into the 45th!

  8. I wish Rahm would save us from this mindless race - stop our misery now!

  9. Eliminate all. Have a mayor and department heads.

  10. Maybe he will start a trend. Cut the council. Cut man power on the fire department. Cut the waste and start looking out for the tax payers. He's toough enough to do it and he's already lining up the votes. I love it.

  11. Rahm, cut away. If it helps us avoid a property tax increase, go for it. The alderman from the 41st had a nice 20 year ride on the taxpayer dime. Enough of that.

  12. I hope whoever wins will have the brain cells to deal with Rahm. We need some attention up here from city hall.

  13. who's the fool talking about CFD cuts - aint gonna happen. We are way down in numbers too.

CFF will come out for O'Connor, whereas the FOP endorsement og Gavin aint goin nowhere - we all know coppers don't vote, they just whine.

  14. willful ignorance in this ward. Blaming tax increases on one politician is a prime example of the simple minded people who are running the Gavin campaign (who blame Mulroe for the recent tax increase)

Take a look at the GE situation - they pay no taxes (in fact we gave them tax benefits of 3.1 Billion dollars!) and yet, it is mostly the Republican party who set up these sweet deals for big companies like GE. Republicans take care of their corporate friends and the Dems have to bail out government budgets.

Meanwhile the middle class is paying thru the nose and big business pays nothing.

  15. The outgoing Republican alderman spends his time stuffing mailboxes with flyers from a made up citizens group and endorses his secretary - not much in the way of critical thinking going on at the municipal level here in a very long time. I'm sure the local Republican elected officials cringe whenever this race is brought up

  16. Bank on Emanuel cutting man power on CFD. Over 800 fireman hired during the strike are coming up on their 30 years and retiring. Emanuel is going to take the opportunity to bring the fire department up to date. Less fires and better epuipment equal a great opportunity to save the tax payers money. The wining firemen have no idea how good they have had it. Too much free time to sit around and gossip like a bunch of busy bodies. GO RAHM, ARENA AND O'CONNOR

  17. To 8:44 A.M: The 66% income tax increase passed the state Senate by one vote. Mulroe voted for it. GE and Imel are huge OBama supporters. Democrats control everything in Chicago, Cook County and Illinois. All three are broke. Finally, business bakes the cake that creates the jobs. Government just eats it.

  18. Downsizing by attrition works for me - CFFs benefit and no one cries foul. Rahm, feel free to cut and trim,

Signed one tired of paying taxes, taxpayer

    ReplyDelete
  19. agreed. whatever it takes to prevent a tax hike works for this voter.

  20. Hurrah for the 30th vote! I'm very happy Mulroe voted for the tax increase because it saved critical safety net services for thousands of disabled citizens from being kicked out into the street. I'm one of those people, and I pray for Mulroe everyday.

  21. I think we need no more than 14 city councilmen. All of Cook COunty has 14 commissioners and its twice the size.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Start with the down sizing the council and go from there. Illinois has more local government bodies per capita (over 6000) than any other state in the union. I for one am tired of paying salaries for part time politicians who are bought and paid for by the special interests. Highest sales tax in the nation in Chicago and some of the highest property taxes in 41. Sick of it!

  23. To 8:44 A.M: 2/3 income tax increase passed by one vote and Mulroe voted for it. Talk about willful ignorance: To listen to O'Connor camp you would think Brian Doherty ran the city state and country and was running in this race.

  24. Young guy wearing an AFSCME Jacket and cap at my door a little while ago with O'Connor info. I asked him a few questions. Good answers. Seemed sincere about believing in the political process. Refreshing.

  25. I fully support cutting city council numbers in half. Will take awhile to do - State legislation will have to be drafted and voted on and that will take time, but Rahm is right about this folks.

Need to critically cut city budget, and I agree 41st ward citizens have been short changed for a very long time.

  26. Norwood park needs to formally seperate itself from the city of chicago, and become incorporated with Park Ridge. We get nothing for our tax dollars in Norwood, including a useless alderman who only stepped foot in norwood park at election time

    ReplyDelete
  27. CUT, CUT, CUT Please! and please cut out the 42st ward alderman's office in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree, keep 45th ward alderman and absorb 41 into 45th.

    ReplyDelete
  29. most taxpayers will want this to happen. A win/win for Rahm. The only people not in favor - current aldermen and candidates.

  30. come and look at how the alleys are around nagle, normandy, natoma off gregory street. they are terrible, huge pot holes. all you get from the alderman no money to fix it, or get all the signatures. well love to but the other side of the alley all have driveways, no one will sign. so i pay 5000 a year in taxes for potholes, and street lights that dont always come on.. that stuff dont happen in pilsen, or the south side and west side. no one is paying or signing for alleys there, but they are getting them fix and put in for free. we dont even have a sewer in the alley.

  31. I agree, cut the number of alderman and the voters will be forced to elect quality alderman. I just looked at the facebook pages of both candidates - one had professional. businesslike postings, the other gossip, comments about how the candidate "looks" and other ridiculous, non-professional postings.

  32. Kass has great article in Sunday Tribune about this. Well worth the read. My first reaction was it sounds like a great idea. I have changed my mind after reading Kass.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I did read Kass' column and agree 100% that we will have to keep this mayor's power in check. And, having more city councilmen to deal with will keep him busier and with less power.

In theory it all makes sense until you take it to the 41st ward where a weak, do the least possible, politician has reigned for two decades. We are used to being ignored and having no power. Doherty never asked us, surveyed us or even set up a website/facebook/twitter to hear what we thought about anything.

We are used to being cut out of any votes or decisions made. So for us, it doesn't matter how many alderman we have, we still will have no voice. All we do is pay high property taxes and aren't kept informed about anything. Will things change after this run-off? I don't think so. Our choices: the last alderman's secretary, who answered the phone for 15 years or a small business owner, who runs a mom & pop operation. Quite frankly, I like the comment about being acquired by Park Ridge.

    ReplyDelete
  34. yeah, why are these northside outgoing alderman endorsing their car driver (Banks/Rice) and secretary (Doherty/Gavin)? Probably concerned other more qualified candidates will find their skeletons.

    ReplyDelete
  35. disagree with Kass. 50 alderman - NOTHING gets done, and they cost us a fortune. The 25 remaining alderman would have to be sharp and made powerful by receiving the support of their constituents. I think if the 41st ward was surveyed, most would agree to a downsize in city coucil.

  36. CFF was dumb enough to vote for Lapinski who if any firemen went to the forums my 13 year old speaks better at the podium. Gee this guy even admitted in one of the forums that he speaks better in person! This is who represented CFF. At least CPD had 3 amazing candidates, although Gonzalez was by far the best! CFF should be cut down in size!
