Transportation in the 41st Ward

This is an excellent question that came through the comments,  I thought it deserved its own post and thread of thoughts from the community....

"I have not heard any mention of transportation related issues on the candidates' websites. Chicago was recently deemed the "most congested city in America" by the Texas Transportation Institute (http://tti.tamu.edu/documents/mobility_report_2010.pdf). Given the location of the 41st Ward, it's likely that residents spend significant time commuting on the Kennedy, the CTA Blue Line, the Metra and city streets.
Does anyone else feel that this is a serious quality of life issue? What about the impact on our ability to be a truly environmentally sustainable city?
What do you think we can or should do to improve this situation? Is this an issue that an alderman should help to tackle?"

  1. Stop it already. Candidates cannot put every issue on websites, much less discuss every issue at forums. If a candidate has every issue on their website I'ld be very worried that they are not fully engaged in other aspects of their life (ie:disfunctional). There are already 20 issues discussed that the candidates have very different views, but it hasn't amounted to a hill of beans. The favorite child gets play on this site, and the machine laughs all the way to the bank because of the split votes between independants.

  2. Simple efforts:

    1. Promote walking to and from the schools with the help of local school councils and parents.
    2. Create pedestrian maps of the ward with places of interest, rest stops, and parks marked for fun walks.
    3. A couple of bike paths throughout the ward

  4. Would whoever wrote the question like to expand with some specific ideas, especially in regards to creating and maintaining an environmentally sustainable ward and city?

  5. Bike Path is a great idea! Especially one that would connect to the forest preserves off Milwaukee or Touhy. If they want to expand restuarant row (O'Connor claims she is responsible for this BTW) they need to put up a parking structure. They shouldn't be allowing more restaurants and assume parking on the neighborhood streets is a solution.

  6. The photo inserted into this post comes from a Reader who saw it posted as an award winning photo in last years "Redeye" photo contest; the photographer is Alphonso Monroy.

  7. I have been riding bikes with my kids for years around Norwood Park and have wondered why a bike path has not been established along the reailroad tracks?

  8. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning also recently issued its "Go to 2040" regional plan to help guide the city with regards to transportation. What are some of the recommendations in the plan that could or should impact the 41st Ward?

  9. John Quinn stated that he would add more bus routes and faster cta blue line service to cut down on heavy traffic congestion. I think that is a great idea. John Quin will get my vote, as I am a cta user.
