Streets and Sanitation Department Moves to the "Grid" System Part 2

See a previous post from a few days ago to read about the move to a "Grid" system for Streets and Sanitation Services.  The change is expected to save taxpayers approximately $64,000,000 the first two years and the grid system is the system used to collect garbage in almost every large city across the country.

A few of the aldermen, including our own current alderman, have concerns about the change:
  • A city wide grid system takes away local control of how garbage is picked up and streets are cleaned/plowed.
  • Personalized clean -up after block parties and other events will cease.
How will we be notified about the change?  Will the alderman post something on his website?  Will he call a meeting to educate the community?  Will he send out a letter?  Most likely he will leave this to the next alderman to deal with.

Here is an article with quotes from our current Alderman about his concerns with the change.

City beats candidates in move away from ward-based trash and street services

  1. I remember when everyone was "concerned" when the city moved to a centralized 311 call center... we would no longer have to call the alderman's office to have a tree trimmed, report broken streetlights etc. The 311 call center has computerized tracking systems, up to date info about all the departments and other features that have really improved service.

No longer are we at the whim of the alderman's office to receive services.

  4. Wow O'Connors idea has gone big time. LOL Whats funny is O'connor voters actually believe she came up with this idea and I think she has even convinced herself of it

I don't know how it will save costs. However if the snow plowing gets worse I won't be happy. The garbage guys are great so I hope that doesn't change either

  5. Well, we can always add on a mobile portable casino to all the garbage trucks. The Streets and San boys & girls can deal a little blackjack and roll some dice to earn their keep.

  6. Almost all of the city services will be centralized now that we have the grid system. Can we get rid of a few dozen alderman now?

  7. Chicagoans are so easy. For years votes being bought for a mere garbage can. Maybe the bar should be raised a little. Would good government and reasonable taxes be to much to ask for ones vote?

  8. PB, you make far to much sense. Readers, you may not realize it, but we have been visited by a political icon... perhaps a political "avatar" is a better word.
