Should City Workers be Required to Live in the City?

Should city workers be required to live in the city is an important question put to the mayoral candidates recently.  Many good reasons to keep the residency rule and also to eliminate it.  The 41st Ward has many city workers living here...  what do you think?

  1. Yes, should be required. Essential City Employees (police, fire, essential city services such as water, streets etc.) need a vested interest in creating a good place to live since they live there themselves. Plus they need to be close by to handle emergency situations. The recent Blizzard is a good example that they need to be close by to respond.

  2. For economic reinvestment reasons - yes. If you don't want to live in the city you work, don't apply for the job.

  4. The new census data released the other day indicates the City of Chicago lost 200,000+ residents. The city can't afford to lose anyone else, especially taxpayers.
