Sun-Times Disregards Qualified Independent Candidates

The Chicago Sun-Times endorsed an under qualified candidate for 41st Ward Alderman today.

There are a couple of 41st Ward Aldermanic Candidates who have the education, qualifications, knowledge and experience to run the ward, in my opinion. They happen to be independent candidates.  A political party candidate, O'Connor, has money and support from a special interest group and a political party with a long history of corrupt behavior in the city, and unfortunately received an endorsement from the Sun-Times.

The Sun Times newspaper editorial board bows to political parties and special interest groups who buy their advertising. Good, solid independent candidates, who are qualified for the position and would be best for the well being of the community are being mowed over in the aldermanic candidate endorsement process.

Editorial: More endorsements for aldermanic races - Chicago Sun-Times

  1. So much for the Sun-Times knowing and understanding of the social-political dynamics here in the 41st Ward.

Their endorsement smacks of an all to typical disconnect between the average voter in the 41st and the insular environment/world of a liberal newsaper(the only kind left in America today)in a big city like Chicago. Seems they have a vested interest in seeing this Ward 'go democrat'. Its my guess the voters will turn out their candidate in favor of one who displays a clearly non-partisan approach to local ward governance.

Our future Alderman has to be the one who represents youth. One who, truly embodies their rationale behind their endorsement of the Democrat. Their pick know more has a "broad understanding of the city’s problems and how to address them" than the man in the moon. Where and when did their pick acquire "broad understanding"? Employment in a 'city position' over a number of years that would give her this 'broad understanding? I don't think so.

O'Connor is unqualified. And could no more bring adequate representation to the city council forand from the 41st.

This endorsemnt is a pure Democrat Party attempt at the manipulation of the voting public's perception of who the most qualified candidate is.(I hate ending a sentence with 'is'.)

We independent voters in the 41st Ward can do better than elect this person. Let's keep our uniqueness as the only Conservative ward in the city and vote for youth, an active day-to-day working experience in city government and one who can articulate the problems and workable solutions we need in the 41st ward. 11 run,1 wins.

  2. How can the Sun-Times endorse O'Connor , a candidate who hasn't even filed a required by law, candidate financial disclosure statement?

This is another phoney endorsement for O'Connor. The party "fix" is in.

  3. O'Connor doesn't have any understanding of "broad city problems and how to address them".

The independents did a far better job at the forums than O'Connor. She verbalized absolutely no understanding of the city budget or anything remotely connected to how city systems operate. All she said (repeatedly) in the forums is that she will run the ward office like her catering business...

  6. The Sun-Times needs to realize we are the schmucks who buy and read their paper.

  7. I have no information about O'Connor besides the Olympia Park forum last week where I was NOT impressed with her comments. Her website lacks basic information such as educational background etc. Her naiveness came out when she suggested to work with United Airlines to develop "a Technology Center". Give me a break! Her comments were such that she'd be better running a Girl Scout Troop then run the 41st ward. Not impressed.

As noted the only 2 candidates qualified are Murphey and Gonzalez.

Apparently its turning into a popularity contest and who can put up signs.

Mary O'Connor will NOT get my vote because she is NOT qualified.

  8. There is so much wrong with this endorsement,on so many levels, where can anyone even begin a discussion........................................................................................................................................In Summary, use your brain and vote for someone who is qualified and can deal with ward concerns at the community and city level

  9. O'Connor still hasn't filed candidate's financial disclosure, as required by law, on the Illinois State Board of Elections website. The disclosure should have been filed on January 20, 2011.

This is the candidate the Sun Times has endorsed? Can't file forms on time or perhaps hasn't complied with the new state law in some way?

This is a HUGE red flag (I noticed the red flag post)

  10. I voted for Mulroe for State Senate because he was the most qualified candidate (accounting degree) even though he was a democrat. He was the right person for the job.

Mary O'Connor may be a democrat, but she is NOT the right person for the job. She has no broad plan for anything..nothing on her web site about job development, the budget, community development, just some superficial stuff that my eight grader could have written.

  11. "O’Connor, who has run a local catering business for 20 years, gets our endorsement for her broad understanding of the city’s problems and how to address them"

Yeah, Suntimes, O'Connors understanding of the city's problems are so broad, they even elude her

  12. I'm Sorry, I made a huge mistake. I thought that these blogs would have done there homework. John Quinn raised more money, collected more signatures, placed more signs and is far more qualified than any of the candidates that are running in the 41st ward. Check with the Illinois board of elections, they cant report anything but the truth.

  13. Sun Times. You are a joke. But the joke is on us. Don't worry, the Chicago Tribune will come to the rescue and also make a joke of an endorsment.

  16. John Quinn can't speak to gym full of people without looking down at piece of paper the whole time. Sorry Anonymous...he is far from qualified.

And quoting his website was "Terminated" from the City...ahhh why would he even waste his money running for Alderman he has no chance.

  17. Stop saying 11 run 1 wins. Your verbage points to your favorite child who is the first one on the ballot. You are just as sneeky as the democratic party. The person you like is not the most qualified. His position on crime reduction is to work on making bullets illegal per his Tribune statement. News flash...bullets are already illegal without a FOID card. Your boy Murphy has not succeeded with urban renewal as witnessed by his job in Berwyn and then on the cities south side. How's that going anyway?...just placing a Walgreens on prime south side corners and performing other fluff projects does not equate to a wonderful career. Your biasness is sick..

  18. Crime is getting out of control and heading our way. You don't see it because it's creeping our way. Our education system is out if wack, Shortage of police continues to rise with many still retiring. What can Mary O'Connor possibly do to fight these issues with her 20 years experience in catering business? 41st Ward residents Mary O'Connor is not the right choice. If Rahm Emmanuel becomes our new Mayor, the only he'd tell O'Connor is "Where's my dinner woman?".

  19. Leyden didn't give money to O'Connor or anyone else in the race. Check the D2's.
