Post your Property Tax Increase Nightmare Stories Here

Property Tax bills have arrived....

  1. $483.00 increase this installment just for CPS. Other smaller increases too. This is insane. And for what? Police sent to the southside and a falling apart, overcrowded school for my kids. I hate this city and can't wait for property values to improve so I can get out of here.

  2. BGA reporting the annual cost of Alderman Burke's security detail:

$595,682 in just 2009 alone, adding up to an estimated $11 million since Burke was given the security detail back in 1983.

Here’s the breakdown: four full-time officers making $150,000, $147,000, $140,000, and $132,000 in 2009, plus a part-timer who made $25,000. Those figures do not include health or pension benefits. Since each person’s base salary is between $90,000 to $100,000/year, the figures show these police officers are making a ton of overtime.

The Better Government Association obtained the figures after filing a transparency lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department.

  3. My tax bill increased about $350, and I don't even send my kids to CPS

  4. 11 million days of taxpayer money to protect some alderman's image? Senators and congressmen don't have bodyguards. Who does this guy think he is? CPS could use the $600,000/year "for the kids"

  5. In one year my taxes have increased $1200.00 and i'm a senior citizen. And for what?? Schools that I haven't attended since 1950 and security details for a former mayor AND his family and friends. Take away Daley's free rides along with Burke's. Let them pay for EVERYTHING themselves.

  6. $1075/year increase here, and I'm not even invited the alderman's education forum where "my interests" are "well represented" by a bunch of CPS paper pushers and bureaucrats.

I liked the comment referring to this ward as "Stalag 41".

Just pay your taxes and shut up, says the alderman. Thats what the mayor told me to tell you.

  7. 10:45 you live in an oppressive ward where the alderman thinks so little of you she doesn't invite you to participate in an education meeting discussing PUBLIC education. Just pay your taxes and shut up.

  8. My property value has dropped to a new all time low. My house is worth about 60% of what I bought it for, yet my taxes gave increased over $1000.00/year mostly for the Board of Education. And we have an alderman afraid of her shadow and does whatever she is told.

  9. I've been thinking about running for alderman next election. I think it will be too easy, though.

  10. I don't think the alderman is responsible for the property tax increase, but I do hold her accountable for not allowing the community to be present for the education meeting held without notice to the public.

  11. Nothing will ever happen in the 41st ward due to the political miss match here. Rahm did not carry the 41st ward, yet the alderman supports him over the voters who elected her.

  12. +$847.00 difference between 2009 property taxes and 2010 property taxes, including $492.00 just for Board of Education.

Even though 41st ward doesn't have a TIF district, we pay all of our taxes into the general city budget to support CPS and CPD for EVERYONE.

If we had a TIF district, we could hold back millions of dollars for just our ward (in theory) for development projects. If the entire city had no TIFS, there would be more money in the general budget for CPS and CPD, thus keeping our taxes in check and able to avoid tax increases.

TIFS do not help the 41st ward, unless we develop a TIF district of our own.

  13. I remember the average property tax increase being quoted in the mayor's press release as $84.00?

Why is my tax increase 4x that amount?

  14. 12:07 is right. The mayor wishes the 41st ward would drop off into the ocean. He has no use for us except for our tax money.

  15. less cops, decreased library hours, questionable recycling program (yet to be seen) and a large property tax increase.

only in chicago could a mayor get away with this.
