  • Huge cache of stolen goods found on North Side

Chicago Police not only have a burglary suspect in custody on Friday, but they also have a veritable warehouse filled with sporting equipment, bicycles, power tools, cell phones and other items taken in a string of North Side garage break-ins.
Police on Friday announced charges in several garage burglaries in the Belmont District. Robert Gayol, 47, of the 5200 Block of West Newport, is charged with two counts of felony burglary and misdemeanor counts of theft of lost or mislaid property.

About 6:45 p.m. Monday, Belmont District officers responded to a call of a sporting goods store in the 3900 block of North Ashland, where Gayol was attempting to sell several sets of golf clubs to the store, police said.
The store employee recognized Gayol as the same person who had previously sold a set of golf clubs that had turned out to be stolen. He managed to stall Gayol until police arrived and arrested him without incident.

Burglary Mission officers assigned to the district joined the investigation, which coincided with a burglary pattern in which the suspect or suspects would enter unlocked garages and steal items, the statement said.
In one instance, the burglar was seen driving a dark-colored Dodge SUV, similar to one that Gayol owned, police said. A family member subsequently implicated him in the crimes.
A search of Gayol’s garage turned up a veritable department store full of items, ranging from sporting equipment and bicycles to lawn ornaments and power tools, cell phones and chargers, power washers, ids’ electric cars and other items.

Police say the arrest cleared at least two separate burglary cases so far, and Belmont Area detectives continue to investigate and are asking burglary victims to come forward to identify their stolen property.
Gayol appeared in court on Wednesday and was ordered held on $100,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Monday in North Felony Court, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office.

    1. Quite a load of stolen mechandise - looks like this guy was probably in 100 garages and who knows how long he has been practicing his thieving trade. What does someone do with all that stuff except have garage sales? How do you ever move it? Lots of lawn ornaments to - just stole stuff out of gardens too.

    2. One of those bikes looks like my daughter's $400.00 stolen bike (out of the garage about 3 months ago). The bike was registered, so I'm assuming the detectives would call me if it were a match
