A blog for people who live in the 41st Ward, Chicago, Illinois. The 41st Ward includes Oriole Park, Norwood Park, Edison Park, Wildwood, Edgebrook, Big Oaks and O'Hare communities.
More of an issue for me is why Gavin is going after renters, saying renters aren't effected by increasing property taxes. That's just wrong. My mother lives in an apartment on Higgins and each and every time there is a tax increase it gets directly passed on to her. Believe me she is well aware of it on a fixed income.
Gist of the article - she shouldn't have voted at her business 9 years ago, but she has voted from her home address the last 4 years - there is no crime and nothing illegal.
Gist of article is that she signed an affidavit stating she lived where she did not. Former State's attorney said he probably would not have prosecuted. In a city with hundreds of murders and a county state's attorney's office that handles over 60,000 felony cases a year, that is a far cry from saying she did not commit a crime. The question I have that has not been answered and makes a big difference to me is where did she live for those three and one half years? If she lived in the ward then it seems like a stupid mistake with no harm. Actually, a stuipd mistake that makes no sense. If she did not live in the ward, then it was calculated so she could vote in the ward and that is a much bigger problem for me. My problem is, like most politicians, I just don't believe any thing she says any more.
8:34am I think you bring up a very legit concern. Every year many, many votes come in city council related to renter concerns. We do have a substancial number of rental units left in the ward and good neighbors who live in them that go to our schools, churches, and live in the ward.
What concerns me is Gavin's lack of knowledge with renters issues. Her stand is that renters don't understand property taxes, yet those of us who rent are very much effected each and every time there is a reassessment or tax increase.
How will Gavin vote on renter issues? From where I'm sitting most likely with the landlords and less likely with the renter.
Anyone else think they're living in the twilight zone, in the 41st? I can't believe how stupid this race is. The city budget is a mess, pensions about to go insolvent, the schools are falling apart while a $500,000,000 TIF fund serves political cronies. I haven't seen a cop on the street in months and I just paid $500 for front end damage - broken strut from the pot hole in the middle of a street a few blocks away. Give me a break. Gavins nuts if she thinks I'm voting for her. The city is a disaster and all she can talk about is 9 year old dirt on her opponent?
I'm glad the suits weighed in but I don't care about Gavin's accusations. She and Doherty have the WORST service record in the history of the city. Nothings happened in the ward for well over a decade and the outgoing mayor ignored this ward because of the lame leadership. NO MOre
I've received comments to post the new title of the article, and others to post the title printed in the paper, so I.ve decided to forget the title altogether in the interest of community peace.
I work for the corporate offices of Shell in Illinois and I probably shouldn't be saying this but what the heck, it's anonymous. Maurita Gavin and Brian Doherty BOTH called Shell and threatened if the signs were not taken down there would be payback, either while Brian is still alderman and/or when Maurita is elected, which hopefully won't happen given her uppity attitude when calling us
What is the real shame here, is that the 41st Ward rarely gets any media attention and when we do, it's about this mindless nonsense.
Why can't this be a ward where great city policy comes from? How about a new and cutting edge multi-community council, participitory budgeting and/or governance, a business development bureau, a new dynamic high school with a high end manufacturing program, a world class bike path, redeveloped parks for the kids.
But no, we get this idiotic campaign crap published for the rest of the city to see our shame.
Ok now w e all know for sure THE 41st WARD BLOG IS A TOTAL MARY OCONNOR CAMPAIGN WEBSITE... TOTAL FARCE !!!! WHOEVER READS THIS AND DOESNT POST... you are nothing but a diservice to the 41st WARD ! Gavin squeeks this on Tuesday and if by chance Mary wins...LOL COMEDY... she will drown inside a week NO CLUE HOT AIR....shes thinks running the ward is that stupid turkey trot that she doesnt shut up about....she had a lotta help with that one would think she is a savior
the 45th ward candidates had one-half page spread dedicated to their write-up, and it was mostly about business development - a key issue. Not the petty silliness the Sun-Times was forced to write about the 41st. No substance here in the 41st.
To 4-3 6:06 p.m: You are full of it you work for the corporate office for Shell. This voter gets gas once a week at the harlem higgins shell. I told them if they did not remove the signs, I would be getting my gas across the street. Several of my neighbors told them the same thing.
Approx 25% of the registered voters in the 41st ward said these are the two candidates we should choose from. Those 25% are pathetic. And the 50% that didn't vote in the General election should be excommunicated.
I think the real inspector general should investigate Maurita Gavin for intimidating the Harlem/Higgins Gas Station Owner. Coercing him to take down his O'Connor signs and telling others not to buy gas from him lacks ethics, character and integrity.
Gavin is still a city employee and using her job position to intimidate local resident's businesses should not be tolerated!
Oh cause wait really Maurita is a bully.. YOU PEOPLE ARE DELUSIONAL.....Well you would have to be MARY AND JOHNNY.... YOUR OWNED BY SEIU COMMUNISTS Ward will go to hell shortly just watch Dohertys no prize but Ill take Maurita any day over SEIU OCONNOR....
Just read this article now:
ReplyDeleteDirect quote: "O'Connor's foe. Maurita Gavin, has tried to make a campaign issue of O'Connor voting from her business between 2004 - 2007"
"It didn't hurt anybody"
No surprise there - a seven year old voter issue, that was corrected over four years ago - nothing there of substance. Just petty campaign silliness.

ReplyDeleteGood follow up piece, Abdon. You are a professional.

ReplyDeletegood, maybe now Gavin will have to spend the last two days dealing with real voter concerns.

ReplyDeletediscriminating against renters, are we, self-imposed person of integrity & character and "class act". A form of class warfare, picking on renters.
ReplyDeleteHere is the electronic Sun Times article

ReplyDeleteI'm referring to the Mary O'Connor sign posted at the corner of Harlem and Higgins
ReplyDeleteThe Shriver Center, Housing Advocacy Division may want to take a look at the renters concerns about discrimination
ReplyDeleteThe Mary O'Connor sign is missing from Harlem and Higgins - I just drove by. So Gavin bullied them too?

I;m not surprised
ReplyDeleteI'm buying my gas from Harlem/Higgins from now on
