Community Meetings about Chicago Public School Utilization

Take a look at the enrollment data by clicking on the link.. 41st Ward schools are all overcrowded. http://cps.edu/About_CPS/Policies_and_guidelines/Pages/qualityschools.aspx
ReplyDeleteI went last night. The CPS wanted to talk about under-utilization and school closings but the parents wanted to discuss the overcrowding of schools in the northwest side. The meeting was not to answer questions, it was for the CPS to gather concerns from the parents about closing schools. Nobody that spoke had kids in a school on the chopping block so I don't know how useful the meeting was. Concerns were brought up that the meeting was just to appease the parents and that the city already has its agenda laid out. There seems to be huge disconnect between the CPS' priorities and the parents' of our area.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately parents like me who have a child in a 41st ward school have no voice. Alderman Mary O'Connor purposely drowns our voice as evidenced by her famous "Listening Tour" when she invited the CPS CEO to "listen" to principals, and a few carefully chosen teachers and local school council members who would never EVER challenge CPS or the mayor. Parent concerns were filtered through people who's jobs and positions are contigent on sucking up to CPS and the alderman.
DeleteWhat do you wish the alderman would do to help the parents in the neighborhood? What are the problems with your child's school? And how do you want to see them fixed?
DeleteI did not attend CPS nor do I have kids, but I am trying to figure out everything I can about it. Any feedback helps.
I want to see a concrete "School Overcrowding in the 41st Ward Plan". We can not wait for CPS to close underutilized schools first. Lets deal with the most urgent issue first, you know, overcrowding the critically effects children's learning!! Underutilization doesn't directly effect the children, and if Rahm were true to his word instead of a liar, he would genuinely see that overcrowding was dealt with first.
DeleteThe priority of Rahm/CPS is more charters. Interesting story in today's Sun-Times about "demonstrators" downtown demanding "choice" in public education. Rahm has stated "choice" in P. E, is their right. Wrong. Parents already have choice, called private schools. Either you send your kid to the local public school and contribute to its success, or enroll in a private school. Period. No more tax dollars to Rahms' fundraisers.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with this statement. Rahm's charter school owners heavily financed his campaign and have much to gain by placing their schools in our neighborhoods. Few people understand these schools don't have the resources our kids need, and charter schools under-perform because of this.
DeleteCheck out today's Sun Times front page stories about the mismanagement of Charter schools with STATE money. I bet Mulroe voted to have State Taxpayer money go to these charter crooks. ANd why are charter schools being built when the city is closing schools all over the place. Sent the STATE MONEY to OUR WARD AND YOUR AREA State Senator Mulroe!
