Chicago Police Staffing 101

I saw this on EveryBlock- 45th Ward.  This is an excellent post explaining why everyone who lives in the 16th Police District (which includes the 41st Ward) needs to call & email the aldermen and the Mayor.  Be loud, clear, direct and VOCAL.  This is a very serious issue, and it needs everyone's attention.
Thanks Rick!

New Kid On the Block- Rick posted a new message to Ward 45:

Chicago Police Staffing 101

As we start to see more graffiti, robberies, burglaries, shootings, etc. we should all be reminded why this is steadily increasing.

The 16th District is the largest Police District in the city with 202 Officers assigned.
http://www.chicagonewscoop.org/chicago-police-staffing-crime-rates-by-district/
Between 3 shifts, 3 tactical teams and office staff, along with days off, medical and vacation days, you get a small number of actual officers on the street.

16th District Beat Map:
http://gis.chicagopolice.org/pdfs/district16.pdf

The District has 12 Beats.
Each beat gets one car. The tact teams may have up to 5 cars on the street if they aren't detailed out, sent to some sort of training or just short on manpower. Our 2 gang teams have been gone for a very long time.

If they assign a job considered dangerous, they either send a 2-man car from the beat of occurrence or a 1 man car and they pull a car from the neighboring beat to back up that 1 man car.
If your beat car makes an arrest, takes lunch, or goes to back up another car, you have no beat car on your beat.

When they have a big OUTDOOR ROLL CALL; there are no cars on the other beats during that roll call.

I'm telling you this because we as citizens need to understand that we are not getting the resources we are paying for with our tax dollars.

Looking at the map from the Chicago News Cooperative, the 15th District has 283 officers, the 7th District has 386 officers and these districts are significantly smaller than ours.

Yes they have higher crime rates, but the large number of officers they are sending there would surely indicate that MORE officers does help combat crime.

Another comparison is our district to the 23rd district with 191 officers or the 21st district with 206 officers. Both districts have low crime and about the same amount of officers as 16; they are also about a 1/4 the size of 16.

By the way, the most recent graffiti issues are on Beat 1623.

  1. These are the details no one has been willing to tell us. No wonder crime numbers are up.

  2. Once again, reinvestment into our ward doesn't happen. And who is responsible to make sure we receive police protection? The mayor? He could care less - he just wants the headlines to quit saying we are the most violent city in the nation with the most gang bangers in the country. The aldermen are suppose to make sure we receive our taxpaying fair share! Public safety resources should be doled out based on what the ward puts into the public safety pot of money. So in our ward, we shouls have cops on every block for the amount of money we pay. But, our alderman, says nothing.

  3. Why doesn't the alderman introduce a city ordinance mandating Chicago Police staffing numbers be posted quarterly, so taxpayers can see where resources WE ARE PAYING for are going? Why is this information top secret and have to be smuggled out of police headquarters?

    Come on!

  4. How can this be allowed to happen?

  5. So where is Alderman O'Connor's action plan? Has anyone seen one? I just checked her website and there is no plan to address the Police SHORTAGE!

Be outraged and demand we get our fair share of officers.

  7. You silly northsiders - until your burglaries top 1000% increase and there is a murder everyday, don't expect any response from politicians who are doing everything they can to keep the real CITY crime numbers from getting out, nationally. Who wants to visit the most violent city in the nation? You should all know my now, our middle class purpose is to support the city, and that means making downtown look good. These pesky city murder numbers have to be addressed for they make the city look bad. That's the real reason Rahm wants all the cops in the hood. Get those murder and mayhem numbers down now, because his campaign donors demand it!

  9. The police Department just shuffled the deck and we got a new Commander in the 16th District today. Captain James O'Donnell is coming to us from the 5th District on the South Side. He comes from a VERY busy district.

  10. If your neighbor is a hack, they are the enemy. Hacks have no conscience, they just look out for themselves.

  11. Shots fired at an Off Duty Police Officer last night during an Armed Robbery near Lehigh and Caldwell. 15-20 shots fired by Offenders who were waiting for the Victim to get home after collecting $$ from the stores he owns. Fortunately, an Off Duty P.O. working security for the store owner thwarted the Robbery, but the bad guys got away. Way too many things happening in one of the highest taxed areas of the city, because our Police Officers are being sent elsewhere. Those who prey on innocent people know this, and guess where they are heading? Everyone, keep your eyes open at all times, the police in the 16th Dist. are few and far between, and it's going to get worse before it gets better.

  12. shots fired at would be robbers by off duty in Wildwood. What do we need to do to convince the alderpersons to shake them up? Three violent incidents already this year in 16. Is everybody awake now?

  13. There needs to be coordination about neighborhoods, to direct their frustration and anger at their local politicians, namely their alderscum. Enough of the bitching and complaining on boards, we need to act!

  14. I called 911 for a burglary in progress mid day at Lawrence & Central. Guy heard the call and ran out. Adrenaline pumping, I had a description and watched him run east on Lawrence, north on Central. Excited he would be caught! Took 25 minutes for police to show up. Officers apologized for the delay and said, off the record, there were only two cars in the district that day. Totally unacceptable given the taxes I pay!!
