Great Job, 16th District

Three captured after home invasion in Norwood Park

Charges are pending against three men captured by police after an aggressive home invasion in the Northwest Side Norwood Park neighborhood Monday evening.

The incident, which appeared to be random, happened about 7:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of North Oconto, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Two men began pounding on the front door of the home and ringing the doorbell repeatedly. A woman in the home immediately called 911. But at the same time, the two men began to fiercely knock on the door, Mirabelli said.

Meanwhile, another man kicked in the back door, Mirabelli said.
A man in the home tried to keep the third robber from getting in by pushing the back door, but the robber was able to break free and made his way inside the home. Once inside, he threatened the woman. That home invader was the only one to make it inside, police said.
Officers were called to the scene and two of the home invaders were found by beat officers near the Harlem Blue Line station. The third jumped the tracks onto the Kennedy Expressway, Mirabelli said. That man was caught by tactical officers near Foster and Harlem.

The three men were identified by the victims. Home invasion charges were pending as of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The couple — a man in his early 60s and a woman in her mid-50s — were not injured.

  1. Truly amazing given there are no cops left in the 16th. Kudos to the officers who got there so quickly and saved those people. I read the commish is sending even more officers to the gang wards controlled by the reverands in Englewood and Harrison districts. Where will that leave the rest of the city? At risk for more random crime by wandering thugs like this. Call for everything folks.

    2. x-tra xtra I could have been knocked over with a feather. I was flagged down by a neighbor who was held up at gun point at Hiawatha/Jean 1 hour ago. Are you fortune tellers. Unfortunatly extensive on the ground man hunt was negative.

Hi. I was the person held up last Thursday in Edgebrook.
And, yes, I did make a police report. After he started to run, I flagged down the first car coming and he stopped. He said he lived a block away. I told him what happened. I was shaking so badly I couldn't dial 911. As I was trying to dial 911, he called his neighbor who is a Chicago Police Officer. He was there in about a minute. His name is Brock Merck. After giving him a description and showing him where he ran, he took off after him.
The police arrived in about five minutes. They were extremely helpful then and afterwards. They have called me every day and came to my house three times with photo line-ups, which were all negative. I feel the Chicago Police have gone above and beyond anyting I could have expected from them.
I saw Mr. Merck in church yesterday and thanked him profusely. He told me he ran all the way back to the train, through backyards and alleys, stopping people. He was still looking on foot when the officers told me I could go home.
I called St. Mary of the Woods because that's where my daughter goes just so they can send out alerts to parents and other local schools which they said they would.
And believe me, I didn't fight him off because of my purse. I had literally 50 cents in there....but I just kept thinking he'll have my address, my house keys, car keys, work keys, pictures of my kids, Social Security. And it was just my first instinct to protect myself. God only knows what else he had planned.

  2. The commander of the 16th District is being transferred to the 8th district - just released a few days ago. Rumor has it he is related (through marriage) to the recently defeated aldermanic candidate from the 41st ward. Could this be the reason for the transfer?

    1. Don't spread unsubstantiated gossip. That's a very serious accusation.

      Delete
    2. Where is the gossip? The commander is related to Gavin by marriage (fact), and the commenter is asking if that relationship had anything to do with the Commander's transfer (question). I don't see any gossip there.

    3. And this commenter is not the first one, nor this the only site, where this was brought up. This is Chicago for crying out loud. Clout matters, or gets you screwed.

    5. Someone official should look into this. The commander has been doing a great job in the 16th, so why move him? Also, the 16th has had so many changes in commanders over the last few years, the district needs the stability of keeping Commander McNaughton in place.

    8. I've seen the commander at two community events and I thought he was a good fit for the neighborhood. I think he is doing the best he can with a significant reduction of staff. Why he is being moved after just a year and a half makes no sense except for the politics...

  6. So, who is the new commander? And will he/she advocate for more police in the 16th? Or go along with the PR spin, "crime is down" and we are "fully staffed" by playing a daily shell game with numbers? everyone knows there are way less police in the 16th these days, and way more tax money going downtown to pay for police protection in other neighborhoods.

    1. And its not just a little less, more like 50% less. The alderperson needs to be made aware that her constituents aren't happy with this, and something needs to be done. Perhaps she's spending too much time catering.

  26. From a senior citizen: can someone tell Alderman O'Connor that sponsoring a senior citizen "Valentine's Day Party" is considered by some, myself included, to mock and infantalize senior citizens. I would much rather have her host a community town hall meeting to discuss public safety and the need for more police. This would really help keep senior citizens safe. Host the valentine party for the kindergarten kids.

  28. I'm 73, work full time and I guess I am a senior citizen. I would never in a million years go to a senior valentine's day party. But I live alone in the 41st ward and am terrified of having my home invaded. I would much rather have party money spent on a police officers salary for the 16th district. I have great neighbors and a wonderful next door neighbor who is a police officer. If it wasn't for him and my neighbors, I would have moved years ago.

    1. 9:53am - that is a great quesstion. Why have police numbers been cut? especially in the 16th, the largest district in the ward. We elected an alderman to represent us and answer questions like that. Unfortunately, she won't address public safety, and the risk her constituents are under living in an understaffed district.

The a**hole mayor won't hire cops, and sends the one's left to the gang infested neighborhoods, leaving our neighborhoods vulnerable to goons like this and then the DAs office won't fairly prosecute the crime?

OT - Can anyone share some facts surrounding the incident in 016 that occurred Monday at 7:30pm? There are several stories out there that just don't make sense. Just want to know, did the bad guys target that home for "personal" reasons or was it a random hit? Thanks.

    1/26/2012 06:07:00 PM

3 west side citizens come over to the far NW side and tired to burglarize a house at 730PM. Bu the family was home. The mutts continued to pound on the door knowing the family was inside and broke down the door. They fled when they heard the police were coming. The family was soo close to a violent beating. It took a beat car 7 minutes to respond but the car was 7 miles away. No one to respond to in progress calls in 016. Now the neighborhood ia a armed camp and very much on guard. To hell with the law, defend your home.

    ReplyDelete
  34. the 16th district is way to large. Needs to be cut in half so response times are better. By the way, how do 16th district response times compare with other districts and how could we obtain that information?

  36. Those home owners who would like to ask Police supertendent McCarthy what is being done to increase patrols in the 41st Ward are in luck. McCarthy has made himself available for questioning at a Chicago Tribune sponsered event titled 'Is Our City Safe?'

For an admission fee of $15 dollars, you can ask McCarthy why the closest squad to the Oconto door kick-in was 7 miles away. The location of this event is Chase Auditorium (as in J.P. Morgan Chase), Feb. 8th, 10 s. Dearborn st, at 6 p.m. this according a half-page add in todays' Tribune.

  39. Real nice logic, isn't it? Take care of your property, behave like good citizens/neighbors, expect your kids to do the same, WANT the police in your area...so the city moves the cops to areas where people behave and act, not everyone, the complete opposite.

What the citizens of 41 need to do is be complete pains in the arses. Call the alderman's office, show up at town halls en mass, and call the police even if you're just suspicious of people loitering around or are out of place. That's why you're paying taxes. If you mess with the boss's numbers, maybe they'll throw more cops our way. They're half of what they used to be. Also would be good to get to know your neighbors, if you don't already know them. Exchange numbers/emails, pass on info, and form block watches. More than one copper has told me that you can't depend on the cops getting there in time to stop a crime anymore, especially in a district as huge as 16, even though they damn will try to.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Spoke with a friend of mine who's a cop. They said that all three of those home invaders have priors. Hopefully they're off the street for awhile. They also advised that it would be a good idea to buy a weapon, take some classes how to use the weapon. Not to panic anyone, but they said lots of cops will be detailed to the summits, and its only logical to believe the honor students will be even more bold. More importantly, work with your neighbors and report everything. Exchange numbers and emails to pass along info. Drive around and don't hesitate to call 911.
